Question:  My doctor has prescribed a medication to improve my breathing.  I was told that by my friend that this medication is a steroid.  I have heard so many bad things about taking steroids.  Are they really safe?  Is the medication methylprednisone a steroid?

Answer:  Methylprednisone, or prednisone is an anti-inflammatory medication that is classified as a steroid.  Many people are uneasy about steroids and stop taking them or take less than the doctor prescribes.  Steroids are meant to work over a period of time to reduce swelling of the airways.  They must be used regularly to be effective.  Always take steroids exactly as your doctor directs, even when you feel better or do not believe they are helping you.  If you stop taking steroids, your breathing can get worse, sometimes much worse.

Steroids can have many side effects if taken over a longer period.  Always ask the doctor about the possible side effects prior to taking the medication.  Steroids must always be taken with food or milk.  Notify your doctor immediately if you develop stomach pain, vomiting, or black stools while taking steroids.

Possible side effects of using steroids include

1.  fluid retention

2.  increased appetite

3.  less able to handle stress

4.  decreased resistance to infection

5.  excess facial hair

6.  osteoporosis
